I You are making music for more than two decades now. What is the main thing
that kept you going? Is it the love for music, the pleasure of performing,
the joy of experimenting, all of the above or something else? Name that
thing please.
As dedicated musicians we could not live without making music. Deine Lakaien is a
project which stayed alive over all these years because it never got boring.
We always experimented, never gave up in going our way to become an
individual band, always tried to improve ourselves.
We changed arrangements of songs which accompany us for a very long
time, presented them in different outfits as a duo with voice and piano
only , or with the band , and lately with the orchestra.
Being for the first time in Romania, tell us please what can the audience
expect from one of your concerts? How would you define your performance?
We will come with a mixture of electronic sound, strings and guitars. We
will play a set which will consist of songs from all our periods.
What about the set list for the Bucharest concert, can you give us a few
hints?
We will play a lot of the well-known favorites of our audiences. From"Love me to the end" until "Over and done".
As far as we know, on-stage you are using some of the best instruments.
Old but very precious synthesizers and so on. Please tell us more about
the instruments you use during live performances and also in the studio.
We use a lot of old analogue synthesizers like ppg wave, oberheim,
roland sh5, etc. But it is sometimes difficult to transport all the
studio equipment on the road, especially when we visit foreign countries
by plane.
What is in your opinion, the most important thing in the process of making
music? Does one need to have a certain background as some level of musical
training, or the music just has to flow?
You have to have a certain knowledge of the things. You can't play an
instrument properly without having trained many years, same is with the
voice. If you really want to sing
you have to build up a solid power and technique.
Is it easy or rather difficult for a german band to succeed outside it’s
home country? Is it english the key in doing that? Or does the music
itself has the power to cross these boundaries?
I guess in our case it is the music which seems to have no borders. It
is the most beautiful language and seems to be understood almost
everywhere.
I never considered us as a typical german band, maybe because of my
macedonian roots.
Tell us a few words about the big Deine Lakaien symphony (your latest
orchestra tour, “20 Years of Electronic Avantgarde”). Was it difficult to
merge, to unite two very different music styles?
It was diffficult but we succeeded with unusual arrangments which made
my partner Ernst Horn and a very interested orchestra. It was not the
usual rock-meets-classic- bullshit which tries to blow up a tiny baloon
into something huge. We used the colours of each instrument to repaint
the pictures of our stories.
In the end, tell us how does the future look like for Deine Lakaien. When
can we expect a new darkwave masterpiece?
After having finished our solo projects we will start soon with the work
on a new DL-album, hopefully we will be creative and enjoy the work as
always in our band history.
